UPS and outdated union practices

I find working for union run companies like UPS make things hard on the employees. When I worked there, the "supervisor" job was basically there for someone to "motivate" and keep us moving, without help. If they would help, they would be reprimanded. It is also a extremely difficult job physically, with no leeway for problems that may arise for people who aren't in tip top physical shape. Your thoughts on unions and severely physically demanding jobs?
